South Australia’s water industry is centred on the development of innovative water management systems and the collection, treatment, distribution, re-use and application of water for national and international markets.

The industry is experiencing a 15% annual growth rate, contributing about $400 million annually to the State’s economy.

Overview
With world demand for water increasing, and Australia battling worsening drought conditions, opportunities exist for investors to work with South Australian companies in developing their world-class water management systems.

• More than $327 million generated by the water industry in 2002-03 

Exports
• Around $400 million in 2006.
• 15% growth rate per annum.
• $800 million targeted by 2013.
• Major export destinations are Japan, United Arab Emirates, the UK, USA, Brazil and Canada.

Research and development
• The national Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Water Quality and Treatment, the South Australian Water Corporation’s Australian Water Quality Centre (AWQC), and Adelaide University and the University of South Australia all carry out research and development.
• Research ranges from identifying blue-green algae species with genetic technology to trialling bubble aerators with treatments in reservoirs.

Geographic focus
• Most companies are located in Adelaide.
